If you own an older R4i card that is not v1.4.3 compatible, it appears there will be no kernal update for these cards to make them compatible. Unfortunately the only solution is to purchase a new R4i v1.4.3 card.

The R4i is the latest R4 adapter specifically designed to be used in the latest Nintendo DSi game consoles.

What is an R4i adapter? Why should I get one?

R4 adapters have been around for quite some time now, they where created so that you could do more with the Nintendo DS game systems. The standard R4 cards are not compatible with the latest Nintendo DSi console and as such the NEW R4i DS card was born! This is fully compatible with the DSi console and nicely it is also backwards compatible with all the previous Nintendo DS consoles so you can sue the R4i with all of them.

The R4i Adapter allows you to perform tasks with your DS that you could never do before! This includes listen to music, watch videos, browse your piccies and also read e-books all from your Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi consoles! The adapter itself is the same size of a standard nintendo DAS game cartridge and fits into the same slot (Slot 1) as the game cartridges. The adapter has amicro SD memory card slot and its on the micro sd cards that you store all the files you want to use on your DS. This then goes into the adapter and that, in turn, into your DS console. Turn on the DS and away you go.

How does an R4i work?

The R4i DS card works by turning your DS into a multi media machine! The same size as a game cartridge the adapter behaves just like a proper game cartridge. But instead of playing games you can load the adapter with a Micro SD memory card filled with your favourite music, films, pictures and e-books! The R4i software (That you also need to load onto the memory card) allows you to access these files and play them on your DS & DSi.

What do I need to use an R4i?

Some people are confused about what you need to get the R4i card working. All you need is the following:

A Nintendo DS, DS Lite or the NEW DSi
- OR -
The R4i Adapter (See box image above). The package should include the R4i Adapter itself, A Micro SD USB Card Reader, and Plastic case and a languard keychain thingy. (You only need the adapter and the Micro SD Card Reader though :-)
- AND -
A Micro SD Card - The R4i Adapter supports SDHC so you can have anything from 2GB to 32GB memory cards. Most people opt for a 4GB card which can store plenty of files, enough for most people.
- OR - - OR - - OR -

What size micro sd do I need? Knowing what size micro sd card to get for your R4i DS card can be tricky. Its not that easy to recommend a particular one because it really does depend oin the sizes of the files you intend to use. However, generally, a 2GB card will suffice for light users and 4GB card will do for most other people. If you have a really large collection of music or video files then you can go for the 8GB or even the huge 16GB card.

R4i Step by Step instructions

For people with little or no technical knowledge then setting up your R4i DS Card can be a little tricky and sometimes daunting. Fear not though we have all the information you need to set your DS adapter up. Just follow these easy to use step-by-step instructions and you will have it working in no time.

STEP 1 - Buy your R4i Card & Memory
If you have not done so already you are going to need to buy your device before you can do anything at all. Obvious I know but if it is the case that you still don't actually have an R4i as yet then we can recommend that you buy one from www.r4ishopper.com. You can buy them elsewhere but we have heard good reports about this vendor and their cards all seem to be genuine. If you don't already have a micro sd card hanging around then make sure you buy one of their bundle deals that includes the card as part of the package. If you are unsure what size memory card to get then opt for the 4GB Micro SD bundle as that will leave you plenty of space without being overkill.
STEP 2 - Check you have everything you need
Its now time to double check that you have everything you need to continue. The checklist is as follows:
- R4i Adapter
- USB Micro SD Card Reader (If your memory card is greater than 2GB then the reader needs to be SDHC compatible)
- A Micro SD Memory Card
- A PC running windows XP or Vista (With the latest updates installed)
- An active Internet connection
STEP 3 - Download the R4i Software
Before you can use your R4i you first need to download the latest R4i software. The software is constantly being updated and is therefore not supplied on the R4i adapter itself. There may also be some sort of legal reason why the adapters are not supplied with the software out of the box. To save you some time we have the latest version of the R4i software for you to download

R4i Operating software (Kernel) (ZIP File)

Click the link and choose a location on your PC to save the file to. Remember where you decided to save the file. When the download is finished, find the file on your PC and then right click the file and choose "extract all...". Follow the prompts and choose the default options. When you are finished you should have a folder called R4i and inside that folder you will find the files that you will need in the next step.
STEP 4 - Setting up your Micro SD Memory Card
- Find the Micro SD memory card and remove from its packaging if necessary
- Insert the Micro SD card into the USB Micro SD Card Reader
- Insert the Card Reader into a free USB port of your PC/MAC
- On a PC you should be prompted when you insert the card reader. Choose to open to view files/folders
- You should now have an empty file window (Unless you have already transferred some files to your micro SD card.)
- Now go back to your other window where you extracted the downloaded files to. Selected all the files and then press the right mouse button and choose COPY.
- Go back to the empty folder for your memory card and right click and choose PASTE
- When done your memory card should look like this:
- Thats it for now - you can add your files you want to use with the R4i card later on. Click onto your C: on the right panel and then right click on the memory card drive and choose to safely remove the device (If you just unplug the USB reader without doing this you can damage your memory card and lose your files!)
- Now remove the USB reader from your PC and remove the memory card from the reader. Try not to touch the metal connections.
STEP 5 - Using your R4i for the first time
Now we can test out your R4i card using the memory card that we setup in step 4 above. If you followed exactly what I outlined in step 4 then you will not have any music, video or other files on the card as yet. That's fine because we only need to test that the card works and the menu appears on your Nintendo DS when used. Follow these steps to test out your R4i Adapter:
- Insert the Micro SD memory card into your R4i adapter
- Insert the adapter into your Nintendo DS game port (Slot 1)
- Turn on your Nintendo DS/Nintendo DSi
- Your DS should load and you should be able to select the R4 card just like you would if you where playing a standard Game.
- The R4i software should load and it should look something like this:

What is the maximum micro sd capacity an R4i DS Card can accept?
The R4i Card is SDHC compatible and can therefore accept memory cards up to 32GB in size. However when using cards above 4GB try to organise your files into folders and sub folders. We have heard reports that folders with huge amounts of files can cause issues with R4 and R4i revolution cards
Are the R4i DS cards compatible with the older Nintendo DS?
Yes they are, you can use the R4i DS Card with all of the Nintendo DS consoles. We recommend buying the R4i no matter what console you have because should you upgrade in the future you can still use your R4i card.

We have tested the R4i software from our site with an R4i card (Used on a DS Lite though not a DSi). It works fine for us and we have the same folder structure without the _system_ folder. From time to time the ZIP files can get corrupted during download and also during transfer to and from your micro SD card. We have had the occasion where the files did not work withthe loading screen issue you are having and a re-format and re copy fixed the issue. Can you try this? Do you have another DS you can try the adapter in?

If you have problems with your R4i DS Card then it is always worth starting from scratch, and trying it again as files can become corrupted during transfer, either from the online location to your computer or when transferring them to your micro sd card. I can confirm though that the software available on this site does work with the R4i (Purchased from www.r4ishopper.com - It could be that there are different versions available as there are quite a few R4 variations out there - R4 III, R4 Upgrade etc - so it is possible that the version we tested, from memorycardzoo.com, is different to the version you have. We would appreciate it if you could check the box to see if it matches the image on this site?

hi i have read your article and found it very helpful although cant get the r4i to work, when i put he card in the console it states that there is no card in the card slot. does this mean that i ave a faulty adaptor? also when i look on my removable disk file it doesnt display exactly the same as you show above it just displays an open yellow folder which contains the three files.
can you offer any advice

Hi Ju,

If the DS does not show that you have anything inserted then it could be an issue with the contacts of the R4i adapter and the DS itself. This is a known fault which occurs when the plastic is slightly thinner than it should be. We have heard people get around this by inserting a small bit of cardboard to make the contact firmer. Give this a try.

As for the files on your memory card - try to follow the instructions again to see if you can get it to match what we have - if you download the software from this site then it should match....

We have not heard of that symptom before with the two black or white screens. Are you sure you downloaded the correct software for your DS card you have purchased? We've heard that there are various versions of r4i out there with a few fakes too, if you have a different version tothe one we show abopve you may need different software to get it to work. Fiddly these things aren't they?

Hey i seem to have a problem trying to get my r4i card to work on my dsi. I've downloaded the kernel and the card loads up fine to the main menu but when i select the files option on the main menu, this is where i run into my problem. At the bottom of the bottom screen a dark gray bar comes up (i guess loading up the files from the card?) but the bar never finishes and the bar just halts and freezes. At first I thought maybe it was because my gaming files were corrupt. So i deleted all the nds files (the src files not the r4.dat file or any files from the kernel) and i tried putting in the files one at a time and still the gray bar freezes like it did before. Which means either that all my nds files are corrupted (highly doubtful) or maybe my card is messing something or im doing something wrong, please help me i have already bought the wrong card once and i dont want to have to buy another card again.

Thanks for your post. Have you tried replacing the Kernel software with the latest version? I guess you would have done this. Have you got a spare micro sd card that you can use to rule out a memory card issue? Have you tried to just load one file on its own with nothing ele on the card? What size memory card is it? If its asmall capacity card a\nd you are filing it up then the files will not load because they need space on the card to use for their function and if there is not sufficient space avaialable they will not work. Hope this helps...

Hi Again, Just thought I'd let you know I have sorted out the 'Alphabetical Order' issue. I took all the files off and put them in another folder, put them in order and put them back on again in order. That done the trick. I'm not sure what happens when you add a new file though. I might have to do all that again!

The only thing we can suggest is to retry the software download - also make sure you get the correct software for your R4i version you have as they will not work with the incorrect software. Hi Danielle,

Sorry to hear you are having issues with your DS Card. They can be fiddly to get up and runnign so please be patient. FIrstly can you ensure with DSi you are using? Does the box match the box image on our article? If not then you would firstly need to ensure that you have downloaded the correct software for your R4i Card. Using the softwrae for other DSi cards will not work unfortunately. If you have downloaded the correct software then it could be that your item is faulty and it may be worth contacting the retailer. Semtimes the retailer will have the software available that matches with the R4i DS Card that you have purchased. I hope this helps.

To put songs & movies you need to use the moonshell application. If you look up moonshell online you will find plenty of help. For movies and songs you need to convert them to the format that the nintendo ds can read - I dont think that it can accept MP3 files directly (without conversion) to be honest. We are looking at getting a guide for this on here soon.

It would seem that you have the incorrect version of software for the version of R4i card that you have. This sympton you have is 99% the result of incorrect kernel software being loaded onto the card. Unfortunately there are many versions of the R4i and youy need to make sure you download the cortrect version for your DS card.

A few peple have had issues with white screens. Not sure really - by the sounds of it you have had your R4i DS Card working previously so am assuming you have the correct software. It could be that your R4i card is faulty. Can you try a new Micro SD card to rule that out?

You transfer files to the memory card for us via your PC when the micro SD is in your card reader. Do you get any erorr message, does the R4i hang or does nothing happen?

Make sure you have downlaoded the correct software and that when you extracted the files it looks liek the picture in this article. Some people extract the files into a sub folder and this will cause the issue you are having.

went through your step by step instructions all went well until i put card in dsi. Got loading on top screen and black on bottom. Tried r4-v.com and got same result. Im using 2gb Kingston micro sd, could this be the problem ?. What am i doing wrong.

Hi, I am having problems with my R4i SDHC upgrade card. The menu comes up just fine, I can play music on it but that's all when I go into the games menu I can see all of the games but cannot select anything, the screen is freezed. This nearly always means a software issue- either you are using the wrong version for your card or have instalklked it incorrectly. Its painful isn't it? These things are not easy due to the number of versions available unfortunately.

Hi, I have the problem with my R4I SDHC upgradable card. I load the mot current Kernel in the SD card turn on the DSI see the Main Menu then i choose R4iSDHC click start and it just display two blank screen.
Please help

Just drag and drop them into the root of the micro sd card and yes NDS files will work on the DSi

Hi i'm having the same problem like the others i have a dsi ver 1.2e and the R4i (all like above except for the box as mine was red. I followed your instructions but i'm just getting 2 black screens with the top screen stuck in loading. Any suggestion?

We've not seen this ourselves - where did you get the software from? Wa sit from this site? We will be updating our software today with the latest versions so maybe try again with the latest versions

Hi, I have a new R4i card the box looks exactly like the original R4 cards all black on the from except this one says R4i. I get the screen that just says loading and it does not get past that stage. How do I know which software to use, where can I find different versions of software and why does my box look different than the ones on this site. (Mine does not say upgrade on the front). Thanks.

There are different versions produced by different manufacturers. If yours is just the R4i card then go to our downlaods page and download the latest R4i software from there.

Hi, Just got a DSi for my sons birthday, I also bought a r4i card but no matter which software i download it comes up "loading" and stalls there but it works fine in his old NDS, is it just that the software isnt up to date for the DSI as it is only 5 days old, I downloaded 5 different types of software with yhe same results any ideas would be most greatfull as I m at the end of my teather

Hi

I have a DS lite with a R4i card. down loaded R4i.zip unpacked and copied it to the SD card. When I select R4i I get loading and then it hangs. When I unpacked the R4i.zip I got the following floders
Moonshl2
R4iMenu
and R4.dat
I have had the card working but it had another folder called _System_.
The reason for installing your file was to get the latest R4i kernal. I came across your site while searching for a eBook reader for the R4i card. I did down load a DSreader but all I get is two blank white screens. I am new to Nintendo DS and finding it quite a challenge and appreciate the work you guys are doing. The article is about the best I have seen so far it gives all you need to know in easy to follow instructions.

If asking these questions in this comment is not the idea i apologise

RE: me too. firmware version 1.4 does not accept flash carts. Its a problem with your dsi or you have an R4U not an r4i and the sofware doesn't work on them. says so on their site.

i ve had the r4i working on my dsi for a couple of weeks now, after info on this web site thanks . dont no if anyone has had this yet but i updated shop on my dsi and now it says ( an error has occured ) when r4i is inserted GUTTED ! dont know why i bothered to get latest update my daughter is so dissapointed ,just let other people know not to update their system once the r4i is up and running , i think nintendo is on to it

Hi - I have followed all your instructions for my new R4i card and have the same problem Alan had above and many others so it seems which is downloading files as you've instructed (easy to follow might I add) but unfortunately I am getting the loading..... error on the top screen that just sits there. I have made sure that I have the upgraded kernal file you mentioned but to no avail. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problems as many. I have downloaded all relevant files from the correct website that i purchased my R4 revolution card, unzipped and copied onto the SDHC card but get the loading and black screen on my ds lite. What can you suggest please? I have attempted this 5 times now.

Getting very frustrated. The seller has been no help.

I bought this card for my DSI but am having problems with the ds recodnising the software,
I followed all the instructions on this site but when I click on the 'start DS card icon on the dsi the top screen was black and the bottom screen had a message saying:
'an error has occurred.
Press and hold the POWER
button to turn the system off.

We have two DSI's and two R4i memory cards both work fine on one DSi but on the other when the R4 symbol is pressed it says "An error has occurred. press the POWER button to turn the system off. Please refer to Nintendo DSi Operation Manual for details. The manual tells you to ring Nintendo. Can't see them being willing to help with thi one. Any ideas?

hi.. i have the R4i card, and all the games work perfectly as well as music. However now I am more confident with it, I'd like to put movies that I have downloaded onto the card. Is there anything i have to download to get movies on there? and also what format does the movie have to be to go onto the card?

You need to find a converter that will convert avi or other movie files to the DS format - a search ion Google should, help you with this. (Sorry we have not tried this ourselves)

i had loads of problems with my R4i card as i stupidly updated my DSi to firmware version 1.4, i didnt realise at the time it would stop the r4i card from working!!!! Really glad i found your site as i have been looking everywhere to see how i can fix this. As you say the only solution is to purchase a new R4i v1.4 compatible card, DOH! After a bit of trawling about on the net and reading several more forums i found genuine article R4i v1.4 cards at the www.r4ishopper.com I have now succesfuly purchased through their site and everything is up and running perfectly!! wooo hoooo Thanks again for your advice, you have been a life saver!

Hi, I purchased the R4i card (as pictured above) and Micro SD cards, and downloaded the software as per your instructions above. I tried to use the R4 card before i found your instructions but without success. when i insert the R4 card into my Dsi it comes up with "Star Wars Lethal Alliance Ubisoft". when i click on the icon the top screen just shows a diagram of a memory card with "?Menu" on a white background and the bottom screen is just black????

First of all the star wars icon is normal - that is a method that soem R4 vendors use to get around the 1.4 firmware lockout. The other message you are receiving sounds like you ahve not installed the software correctly or just as likely you are not using the correct software.

I just followed all the instructions and have had my friend trying to make the r4i work on the dsi as he has a ds and a different kind of r4 card, but when i put the r4i into my dsi the game it comes up with is star wars lethal alliance and when i enter it, it has a memory card type image with a question mark and it says menu, i dont know what to do.

The Star Wars message is normal and the other issue is most liekly that you are using the wrong software for your DS Card.

Ive downloaded the programs for the DSi but when i try the card in my DSi i get the previous game played come up instead of the R4i icon and if i click on it, the touch screen goes black and the top screen has 'menu?' on it - what am i doing wrong?

I dont understand what to do , i have downloaded all the software things but when i get files I move them onto my micro sd card (16gb) but when i turn on my R4i but the games i downloaded don't come up in the games section. have i done anything wrong? idont really get it. the files are zipped but i cannot unzip them and when i try to it comes up in a error box which reads "Windows cannot open the folder, The compressed(zipped) Folder 'C:/users...\Downloads\0297.zip' is invalid"

It sounds as though your ZIP files are corrupted somehow - can you try ad download them again? Also try putting your files in the root of the card.
