I have three brand new cards and I'm having trouble getting them to work on my childrens DS Lite consoles. I've downloaded the latest kernel from www.r41gold.cn (1.14b) but can't seem to get past the first white screen (star wars). Can anyone walk me through the process. Am I too transfer everything from the new kernel to the card?
Thank you in advance.

The guide is great. Maybe I'm using the wrong kernel. I'm able to get it to work on a DSi but not on a DS Lite. Is there a certain kernel that you would recommend for the DS Lite?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry for hijacking the thread but since I'm having a similiar issue with the same card, maybe kill 2 birds with one stone, if that's okay with the mod. I purchased two of these cards and both don't work. I get an "Application halted !!Please refer [/moonshl2/logbuf.txt]" . I downloaded the latest firmware and place it at the root of the memory card. Created a "Games" folder and put a couple of roms in it, and also placed it at the root of the memory card. The DSi boots up fine but when my son selects the any of the games the error message pops up. I re-downloaded the firmware at least three times. Formatted the card each time. I have setup up R4s and ackcard 2i cards may times for family and friends before and never encountered any problems. I'm thinking maybe there's a problem with the new kernel which was just recently updated or these cards are pure crap. Any help would be appreciated it.

just seen this on a website ill post a link on the bottom of the page
Stopped Selling From:September 2009Points of Note- Intended to be an "upgradable" version of the R4i-SDHC (red version)
- Stopped working with Nintendo DSi Firmware 1.4
- New firmware introduced technologies that the R4i Gold was not ready for, and so it was unupdatable in the end
Main Advantages- Very reliable and a good upgrade from the R4i-SDHC
- Simple interface emulating the original R4 card
Main Disadvantages- Non-DSi compatible after new firmware http://www.nds-gear.co.uk/dsi-cards/retired/r4i-gold

hi thanks for your reply, have tryed to go on the r4igold.cn website and cant get on there, not sure if its been shut down or just heavy traffic, anyway ive been downloading any r4 software and trying at random just as something to do and have got some ware although not properly.Ive managed to get the gold coloured r4i card working and can play games but have no home screen as such i can do a screen shot if needed.i power the ds lite up and get normal first screen then get the star wars rebel alliance screen,it then loads but i dont get the choices of games /media/music (or whatever you get) what happens is that it just lists all the software like it would with the games,im just checking what version software it was and will post back on here cheers darren

I have R4igold.cn card. Have been using it for some time. Freezes some times though. Thought it due to speed of sd card. It will not run a card less than 4gb as it states on the box. That may be some folks problem. I too, believe the site is blocked or down as it is unaccessible. I'm fairly new to ds and cards, as I am a few years older than most of you playing with these things. I just bought an 8gb sd from walmart. thought it might stop my freezing problems. I intend to find out after I hang up this thread, as have d/l'ed roms to card, now just need to get kernel off of 4gb card. I'm slow so may not get done tonight, lol. Anyways, if someone wants the kernel I have just shoot me a reply. Not sure what ver. it is at the moment, but it does work for this card. There are sites, or at least used to be that listed every kernel that was out there. I ran across them when I was d/l' roms. With so much info out there, it is hard to know what is new, good, trash, etc. That's how I ended up with 5 of these cards, lol. I only have a ds lite, so what works for me might not 4 u.

I have the "R4i Gold upgrade" card from www.r4igold.cn with mario on the box like many posting in this thread, and I too have encountered (and overcome) a good many issues with this card. Despite troubles getting this card to work right, it actually runs most all games I've tried perfectly, and is incredibly functional.
The first time I encountered the white screen with this card, it was because I had tried to reformat and update the firmware on my card on my Mac. Turns out, you can't reformat to FAT 32 on Mac OSX, and I've also read that sometimes files for the firmware can get corrupted on mac, although I can't verify the later statement. In fact, after I tried formatting my micro SD on my mac, I tried the same card on the PC, and even after I reformatted the card again properly on a PC, it remains trashed... so never format your micro SD on a mac. I've broken 2 micro SDs and lost good money this way. To be safe, stick to working with your micro SD on a PC. You can load and unload ROMS onto the card from a Mac with no problems, but when it comes to formatting the card and changing firmwares, always work on a PC with Windows.
Now, as for the actual firmwares, the r4igold.cn website always has them, and even updates it fairly regularly - the most recent update came last week. However, this site has been known to go down somewhat regularly and disappear for days or weeks at a time, so if anyone needs a particular firmware for their card, feel free to email me, because I have rars of all of them. Also, one thing I've noticed with the newer releases of this card's firmware is that for some strange reason, they come with incorrectly named files. On all the updates newer than 1.14, you have to take the file "iLL.iL" in the root directory and copy it. Then, you have to rename one of them "TTMENU.DAT" and the other "R4i.dat". I don't know why it's like that, but it's worked for me. If you've done all this, the white screen problem should be solved - it's worked for me. The only thing that doesn't seem to work well for me, and that I haven't found a proper fix for is the soft reset.
Another problem I've had with this card are the "disk errcode: -83" (or 81) when you try to load a rom you just put on the card. The only thing that I've found fixes these is to format the card and put everything on it again. I don't know why, but it usually makes the games work. Also, when using a 4GB SD card with this R4iGold, it takes much longer to load the menus, and I've noticed significantly slower load times on most all games and some even become near unplayable like this (Sonic Classics collection in particular). I'm not sure if this is an issue with the SD card I got (it's a sandisk so I'm assuming not) or the r4i card, but I stick to a 2 GB card and that's what works best for me, despite the lack of storage.
I know that was probably more info than anyone wanted to read, but I thought I'd do all I can to try and save people from the hours of painstaking googling and reformatting and cursing that I've gone through using this card. I hope I've helped!

Here is the latest version of the firmware for this card, for anyone else who needs it. The ILL files have already been renamed as they should so this should work just fine.

Hi there,
Have you seen this guide we made to aid the process of setting up your R4 card?
Installing the kernel to your micro sd card
|
|
By R4DSCards Tech - 03/03/2010 13:32:29

I'm not too sure really - the Kernels should be backwards compatible with your DS but we have had issues with R4i cards working on DS Lites. Although recently these issues have been ironed out with most R4i cards. Although we have never tried a card from www.r4igold.cn.
We have tested some R4i cards to work on both DS and DSi so if you want a recommendation please let me know..

No worries - we would recommend this R4i card from memory card zoo - we have tested this R4i to work on the DSi and DS Lite.

Hi,
Does your box have a URL on it? We really need to find out what website your R4 card is manufactured by. There are many manufacturers out there and it is imperative you use the right R4 software!

So are you using 1.8b and have you extracted the files correctly to your card?

H,
We are getting a few people with the same issue. Its a very odd one that only 2 roms work at a time. I can only imagine it is something wrong with the kernel. Caqn you try to email the manufacturers? We have done this before and we have received quick responses back from them. If you do find anything out please post it on here...

Hmmm thats odd about the dragging - what brand of Micro SD card are you using in your R4i?

|
Its all very odd - I guess it must be the kernel - I agree. Very painful to have to go to these lengths though eh?

since the recent change in legislation some of these sites may have gone down. The first place to check for the latest software kernel would always be the URL written on the card or the box. There are so many manufacturers of these cards and they do not work with each others kernels. if you are experiencing freezing then important to ensure you have free space on your micro SD for your save files. Another good thing to do is format the micro sd using the sd formatter from the sd formatting association, ensure the size allocation is set to "on". At times a micro sd card can be simply incompatible too ( like a bug) so it is worth trying an alternative if you have the means to do this

hi there the R4 only works in the DS lite and the DS. You need to buy a R4i to work in the DSi and DSi XL.
See the link below for advice -
