Hi,

I just bought 2 R4-SDHC upgrade cards for my kids (the www.r4i-sdhc.com version). Very nice stuff but I do have some questions/issues.

Both are formatted using the tool mentioned elsewhere in this forum and have the lastest software. But..

1) One of them loads reaaaallly slow, and gives errors sometimes. I just read that this could come because I have a Kingston 4gb microsd card. So I 'll try to replace and see if it improves. The other one loads quickly

2) Is there some kind of detailed manual on how to use the card? Not installing but all the functions on it? I haven't found one so that's why the following questions.

3) Both cards do not save games? They play a game and save during the game. However when they start the game the next day, they have to start al over again. This is very frustrating and may be a reason for us to switch to a different card.

4) What do all the symbols mean next to the games? Like a little key (cheat?), some red square, something that looks like download play etc?

5) When you want to connect to someone to join a download play, how do you do that? Do you have to take the R4 card out first?

6) In the menu of the games, what are those functions like DMA start, SWreset start mean?

Beside the slowloading issue with one of the cards, the fact that the games do not save and you start at the beginning each time is the biggest issue.

Thanks to anyone that can answer a question!

Hi Etienne,

We are glad you got your cards working! I will try to answer each of your questions in turn (Although I do not know the answers to them all :S)

1) Yes it will be because of the Kingston card - this must be a Kingston error with this card as the issue crops up in iother R4 cards and other brands of cards such as M3 DS Real cards etc. We have personally tested and confirmed this as an issue with all the latest R4 type DS Cards. We have heard that soem manufacturers are workign on kernel updates to resolve this issue but we suggest simply changing to another brand of memory card. We can recommend SanDisk cards.

2) The only manual we can find for your card is som simple instructions on the www.r4i-sdhc.com website. If you have not seen this already check it out here: http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/aboute.asp

3) Make sure that you have not overfilled your Micro SD card - you need to leave space for the Game save file! Leave more then you think you need. I would suggest leaving at least 1MB for each file.

4) I think the key does mean CHEAT etc - the R4i software comes with a cheat file that holds the info to unlock cheats in games etc - You can activate these in games. We never use cheats though - just play the file as intended! :-)

5) I think you can leave it in - download play should just use the DSi memory.

6) Not really sure to be honest - does anybody else know?

Hope this helps :-)

Hi,

Thanx for the quick reply.

I have contacted my supplier to see if I can get the MicroSD card replaced by one that works correctly.

There is plenty of space available on the card for saved games. I don't know if you must  use the 'backup' function in order to play a saved game? I would hope it would automatically use the saved game..

About the download play question:

If I don't have the R4 card inserted the DS starts up and you come into the DS start screen where you can choose the download play option. It will look for a DS that is transmitting.

But when you have the R4 card inserted it will boot into the R4 menu. There is no option to select that you want to look around for a DS that is transmitting a downloadable game. Or is there a way?

So I am not talking about playing together when you both have the same game. But the real download play option where one has the game and the other one doesn't.

regards,

Etienne

Hi again,

I think getting a new micro sd card is a good option. If all works correctly you do not need to use the game backup option. That's for something different.

When you save a game the SAV file should be stored on your micro sd card. When you start the game again it picks up this file and you can load the game just as you would normally. You should not need to do anything different.

As for Download play. When you start your DSi with the R4 inside you should still get to see the initial DSi menu. It should not start right into the R4 menu at all. Can you confirm that it boots directly into the R4?

Again hi,

I bought a new microsd card (Sandisk 4gb). This one works fine. Games start without much delay. I tested a few games and they do pick up where left earlier.

We have 2x Nintendo DS, not the DSi. And they start up right into the R4 menu, skipping the regular DS boot menu.

Regards,

I see what you mean. Must R4 cards for the DS go straight into the R4 menu. However I have tested some (R4i Upgrade from www.r4isdhc.com (no dash)) that first go to the DS home screen. On the DSi all of the DS cards go to the main DSi menu screen before launching into the R4 menu.

Ok, thanks for the confirmation. So I am correct in stating that on a DS, with (most) R4 cards you have to take out the card if you want to use download play.

Then I know I am not overlooking some option or button..

Thanks,

Etienne

Hi Etienne,

Yes that is correct - you will need to take the R4 card out. :-)
