Hi there!
I've been struggling with this problem for two weeks... eventually came across this forum.
Here's the thing: I bought a R4i Gold a couple of months ago and it worked just perfectly. Then I realized some of the newer backups didn't run and decided to update the firmware. Bad idea. The card doesn't work anymore and the only thing I get it's the infamous "menu ?" screen.
Now, just to be sure I did everything properly...
1. The Micro SD card is fine: I've tested it with other files2. The Gold card itself seems to be workins, as long as it diplays the "Star Wars whatever" prompt.
3. This is the card I bought (sorry for the blurry pic, but I'm sure you'll get the idea...):
4. this is the site I downloaded the software from (it's the same written on both the cartridge and the box)
 5. And this is what I get after installing the firmware on the card (I'm on a mac, so it's drag&drop 101). Oh, and the pic is upside-down of course (dunno why  )
I would be super grateful if you could point out any screw-up on my side or could provide any possible solution to the issue.

did you download the software from the url that is on the card or package try downloading it from there reformat the sd card and reinstall

Man, thanks for the advice, but unfortunately it's what I've been doing in the last two weeks... 
At this point I guess the card's firmware is messed up or something, but I really want to check every option before buying a new one.

have you tried using a pc to do the formatting ad file transfer? Ive got a lot of different kernels from various web sites and im trying to upload them so they can be downloaded then you can try all of them one by one and maybe one will work.
